The concept for this lighting piece was to utilise the contrast between light and dark to induce the physical and psychological experience of anonymity and darkness. After earlier research, I was able to establish that the phenomenological experience of darkness alone, can be enough to create a sense of anonymity for effected occupants.
The occupant experiences pure darkness as they stand on the platform of the “Illuminot”. Their identity is hidden by the same ring of light that illuminates their form for others to see. The illuminot has dual functionality in its ability to simply illuminate space and highlight the occupants presence, and its ability to conceal the occupants identity, contributing to their phenomenological and physical experience of anonymity.
The small scale prototype allowed me time to consider the implications of form, balance, strength and weight. Constructing the piece allowed me to experiment with soldering, LED integration, hidden controls and cables, silicon filling and ultra matte black pigment. I was also able to experiment with lighting effects in podium.
PROTOTYPE.
For the first part of this task, it was important to test the design by developing a scale prototype. I was able to experiment with form, weight, materials and learn about the technology required to create this lighting system.
